Theatre Workshop for Children and Teenagers

Theater Workshop for Children and Teens will take place at the Greek Cultural Center under the guidance of ALEX MALAOS.

Alexandros Malaos
came from Cyprus to New York where he studied theater at Hofstra University, an institute attended by such film greats as Francis Ford Coppola and Astoria-native Christopher Walken. Upon graduating with degrees in both theater and business, and while completing his graduate studies in international business administration, Malaos joined the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater in Manhattan, an institute which is home to an intensive Improv Guerilla Training Center where students learn the art of improvisational and written comedy, and which has gradually become the place for great, cutting-edge comedy. It was there where Malaos became a member of Machine Wash Tuxedo, an improvisation comedy troupe which performed at various New York venues and comedy festivals. Since then, his resume of work has included a string of award-winning theater, short film, feature film and commercial projects.
Meanwhile Malaos continued and continues to contribute to New York’s Greek community theater and the Greek Cultural Center with a series of ongoing performances; from classic comedies to contemporary pieces, and from children’s plays to the ancient greats. In the winter of 2007, he was approached by the artistic director of the Greek Cultural Center, to revive the traditional Greek theater art form of shadow puppets, specifically Karagiozis, an art of entertainment dating back hundreds of years. Malaos now takes his puppet act to Greek schools, churches, parks and international art and cultural festivals in the tri-state area, entertaining adults with a nostalgic touch as he breathes life into very familiar and memorable characters. More importantly, with an entertaining approach to art education for small children, he takes traditional stories and modernizes them with contemporary and pop-culture references to appeal to the younger audiences as they learn to appreciate an art form which was enjoyed by their great grandparents many years ago.
Prior to becoming an acting coach at the Greek Cultural Center, he started out and continues to hold his coaching position at Actors Technique New York (ATNY), which specializes in Kids and Teen Acting and Audition Technique Training for television, film, commercials and stage.

Lessons will begin October 16 every Sunday from 11:30 - 1:00pm 5:00pm- until May.
The Workshop will be an hour and a half once a week and will include: Theatrical activities and exercises, improvisation, acting and auditioning techniques, monologue preparation, groupmind development, lessons on body language and staying focused under pressure, and organic games on timing, teamwork, coordination and camaraderie. There is also the possibility of a theatrical performance.
Participants must be 8 -18 years old and the Fee is 60 dollars a month.
